Witcher 3 is a example of a vast but largely scripted world, and owing to that bugs and glitches are much easier to track and fix before release. He essentially says that Bethesda's engine is ridiculously good at creating games with a massive scope in terms of how much is packed into the game world and how unscripted a lot of the interaction is, especially when compared to other games. Arguably, the accessibility and (relatively) low learning curve of the creation kits for Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim are part of what kept those games alive for years. The point is, engines are all about tradeoffs, and as clunky as this one is, it allowed two studios to come out with two fantastic 21st century entries to a great franchise within two years of each other. Urquhart actually admits that Obsidian is using three competing engines right now for different games (Unreal, CryEngine, and Unity), and that the studio has developed its own tech to “bolt on” to other engines, and that they’ve developed their own engines in the past. Good programmers understand this the “Java is better than C++” crowd is mostly made up of petulant high schoolers who don’t have the competence or patience to learn nuance. It’s easy for people to bash technology they don’t fully understand, but it takes a real expert to acknowledge that different tools are better for different problems. In fact, he actually has a few compliments for the whole system (1:39:14 to 1:57:00 is the relevant bit). Urquhart doesn’t bash the Bethesda game engine nearly as much as many of the people on this forum. The whole interview lasts a little over an hour (between the 1:18:55 and 2:37:09 marks on YouTube), and contains some really interesting stuff, but I thought I’d bring up one specific point. Shortly after Fallout 4 came out, Game Informer did a fascinating interview of Feargus Urquhart, the current CEO of Obsidian Entertainment (which made Fallout New Vegas) and former head of Black Isle Studios (which made Fallout 1 and 2). r/galaxynewsradio - Fallout-sounding music r/falloutcosplayers - Fallout-related cosplay r/Wasteland - A subreddit for the Wasteland games. r/thefalloutdiaries - Journal-like fan fiction. r/falloutmods - Fallout modding community r/classicfallout - Classic Fallout Games
